Major & Graduation
Biomecial Engineering ~ May 2018
Academically, my short term goal is to maintain my GPA and stay motivated for my last year of my undergraduate education. My goal is to maintain a balance between classes, research and work but also find time for self-improvement, as it is easy to get sucked into the day to day.
My professional goal is to complete graduate school applications on time without a rush. I have been warned that this process is more similar to a marathon than to a sprint and it is important I maintain my endurance throughout this multiple step process. I want to challange myself to balance between meticulous work and completed work.
Personally, my goal is to work on maintaining networks and being open to meeting new people. I have been in Chicago for 3 years now and it would be easy to stay in my comfort zone, and spend time with people I already know and love. However, I want to challange myself to be open to new experiences, people and perspectives.
Last, although there are many events and tasks to be done in ones senior year it is important to also enjoy it as well, and my goal is to have fun and not allow myself to be overwhelmed.
One of the main reasons why I decided to pursue biomedical engineering is my homeland. Growing up in Bosnia I have witnessed both the devastation of war but also the effects of a fairly effective healthcare system and how it can transform people's lives. Although at this time, the industry of biomedical engineering research is not well developed in the Balkans, I would like find a way to contribute to the healthcare of my people. Access to newely designed therapies, technology and drugs is limited, and this is my underlying professional mission and goal in life.
I would also like to set up a scholarship for women and girls in developing countries to pursue STEM education. From my experience in Bosnia, many women have been systematically detered from pursing degrees in sciences and more technical fields from a very young age. I would like to provide a space, positive community and the means for women who are curious and willing to pursue their passions.
Similarly to my short term goal, my overall life goal is to ensure I enjoy or at least learn from every step and process I go through in life.
